Welcome to Chattagram Maa-O-Shishu Hospital

The parent organization started its journey in the year 1979 as Chattagram Shishu Hospital. This was a humble beginning, which gathered momentum with the commitment and sincere efforts of people from all walks of life. A group of social workers of Chittagong started the hospital in an unfinished dilapidated government building in Agrabad with permission of the Ministry of Health and family welfare.

The small out patient’s services with one part time honorary medical officer on deputation from Chittagong medical college & three honorary paediatric consultant. The whole of the two storied building were later given to the organization step by step (each floor containing a floor space of 91,000 sqft). Shishu Hospital was completed 1988 and maternity services were added to the hospital in 1994 with a capacity of 150 beds. At this time the Hospital was named as “Chattagram Maa O Shishu Hospital”

The hospital was further upgraded with addition of another 300 bed for the general patients making the total hospital bed strength to 500 (CMOSH 200+ General hospital 300).   In order to cater to all types of patients the Hospital was renamed to “Chattagram Maa-Shishu O General Hospital” on 1/10/2004. Work is rapidly progressing towards this project. We are grateful to the government of Bangladesh for providing us with 4.3-acre area of land & the building contained in it, we are also grateful to our innumerable donors. In order to fulfill the long-standing demand of the people of Chittagong. to have an International standard medical college in the private sector, another prestigious project-Chattgram Maa-O Shishu Hospital Medical College was started on 3rd. June-2006.

OUR RUNNING PROJECT
Construction of a huge 850-bedded General Specialised hospital multistoried (14 floor) involving total 5,50,000 sqft. area has started. The construction cost is around Tk. 200 crores (US$ 25,31,64,556). The purpose is to serve 400,000 people of Chittagong and around with one-stop and all types of treatment facilities.

We have started the construction with our own resources which is far short of the assessed fund. We need at least 100 crore taka (US$12,65,82,278). This is an adventure and a challenge for us. We appeal for assistance from local and foreign donors.

1979 was United Nations year for the children. The writer was the President of Rotary Club of Chittagong Bangladesh D-3280. Rotary Club of Chittagong took the initiative to start a hospital for children as there was none in Chittagong and around at that time. The Club invited other social activists of Chittagong who joined and took active part in the establishment of the hospital. The constitution was framed and passed. As per the constitution election for an Executive Committee was held from amongst the members of the hospital.

The Committee develops and manages the hospital through qualified management team. The term of the Executive Committee is 3 years at the end of which a fresh election takes place democratically and the new committee is elected for the next 3 years. The first President was a distinguished elderly Physician of the city by the name Dr. A F M Yusuf, FRCP. The 2nd President was Mr. L. K. Siddiqi, a past District Governor of Rotary District 3280. From 1996 the writer, a past President of Rotary Club of Chittagong D-3280 has been the President having elected repeatedly

Although Rotary initiation was there but the membership was open to all social service oriented organisations. So the committee has members from not only Rotary but also from physicians, Lions, Inner Wheels and other social activists. It is a joint project and that is why it has grown so fast and so well.
The organisation is recognised by Government of People’s Republic of Bangladesh through the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and Ministry of Social Affairs. The academic section of the hospital is recognised by Bangladesh Medical & Dental Council (BM&DC), Chittagong University, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University, Bangladesh Nursing Council (BNC) and Bangladesh College of Physicians and Surgeons (BCPS). This in fact is a land mark for ideal public and private participation for the non-profit making health service organistion.
